Podcasts: information addiction on-the-go

I love podcasts!

Podcasts have been around for ages, but like many people that I know (and probably my age) I was first introduced to these audio experiences when Serial had become an extremely popular back in the fall of 2014. From there all it took was a look at Top Lists of the Podcasts App on my iPhone to be shown the world of auditory story telling, interviews, and music shows. Many of my favorite DJs have weekly music shows posted as podcasts, and before I knew it I occasionally listened in to enjoy a good mix.

Much has changed since then, I’m plugging in my headset any chance I have to listen in to some of my favorites, especially when commuting. Go for a bike ride, why not listen to a new music show? On my way to work, let’s listen to a business podcast! At the gym, find out the stories behind designs. On my iPhone, new podcasts download automatically when I’m connected to WiFi, and delete themselves again when I’ve listened to them. It’s an information addiction, and it is so incredibly convenient to absorb information when the time to sit down and read isn’t always there (I’ve started listening to audio books too). Worry not though, I do unplug and give myself time to think and process all of this in between, but the podcasts never get old.

I want to share with you some of my favorite podcasts (w/links to recent shows I likws), and with a surprise at the end!

The Business Talkshows

At least this is how I think of them. A great way to get insight on the productivity tools of entrepreneurs and what the latest in tech is.

  • The Tim Ferriss Show: This is one of my favorite podcasts, which typically has Tim doing long-form interviews with incredibly interesting people. These range between an 1-3 hours long.
  • Smart Passive Income: Pat Flynn is an entrepreneur in San Diego, CA motivating entrepreneurs to create online businesses to generate Passive Income.
  • Hack the Entrepreneur: Half-hour interviews with entrepreneurs, looking into their processes and how they get things done in their businesses.

The Music Podcasts

This is where I started, so the music shows had to make the list of what I share with you. Electronic producers are overwhelmingly the biggest contributors to these audio shows, and it’s easy to see why: frequent production is right up their alley.

  • Above and Beyond Group Therapy Radio: A two-hour show by the trio known as Above and Beyond. There is probably no other podcast that has such a strong community of listener’s around it.
  • Corsten’s Countdown: Of course a little bias here. Ferry Corsten highlights the best tracks of the moments voted on by listeners and fans.
  • The Monstercat Podcast: This is a weekly show put out by the record label Monstercat, each week a different artist takes over the decks showcasing the label’s best tunes.

Lifestyle and International Relations

These shows all vary greatly in their content and what they produce, but are among my favorite to listen to as I learn more about their perspective fields.

  • 99% Invisible: The untold stories of what is hidden in the design of our daily lives. Based in Oakland, CA, the producers create an amazing listening experience.
  • TechSnacks Podcast: Truth be told, I started listening to the podcast purely because I wanted some Dutch in my line up, and it so happens to be about the tech world. Pure and simple, a good listen for me.
  • Carnegie Council Audio Podcast: Discussions on current affairs and Interviews recorded at live shows in Washington DC presumably. This is a great way to consume very intelligible IR news instead of the normal tabloids.
