The 2020 Living Situation Recap
At the end of 2019, I moved into San Francisco’s Mission District so I could be closer to work, friends, and my partner. Let’s call my partner C.T. for privacy reasons. It came with a big ‘plus’ that two of the three roommates I’d be living with were long-term buddies from UC Berkeley. We all shared a love of music and dancing, which would help us survive the many months of COVID together (I even took up becoming a streaming DJ on Twitch for some time! Recordings here on Mixcloud).
Eventually, our fourth roommate decided to move on. As did a roommate in my partner’s apartment. Anyway, the circumstances of COVID thus presented an opportunity to live with C.T. In the Castro, my partner and I were living joyfully with another couple.
That is until they shared with us that they’ll be moving out as well. Now at this point, C.T. & I realized that we could look for new roommates. Or a new place in SF’s cheaper-than-ever-in-the-last-decade rental market. But why do that when we (okay fine, mostly me) had long-standing dreams of working remotely abroad?!
So, we quickly decided to capitalize on this moment. Within 2.5 weeks, C.T. and I packed our backpacks for travel, put our belongings for the next semi-permanent home in storage, and gave away the abundance we’d accumulated or no longer needed. With negative COVID tests in hand, we safely said good-bye to close friends and family before embarking on a one-way flight to Mexico.
Travel & Be Worldly
Anyone who has read a number of my blogs (or knows me) will not be surprised that I’m pursuing yet another travel opportunity. For this reason, I am incredibly thankful that my manager at Yup said that he had full faith that I’d execute my responsibilities while working remotely from Mexico. Thanks Aaron!
The first two weeks between Sayulita and Puerta Vallarta have been full of tacos and delicious food while adjusting to life on the road during COVID. The tighter restrictions due to COVID are of course nothing to brush off. We keep our masks on when we’re in public, wash our hands regularly, and keep our distance.
For the most part, we’re working safely from our AirBnBs just like we would back in San Francisco. Except now with warmer weather and a slightly different view. Ironically, I have more time to work on side projects as a nomad than when living at home. Maybe it’s just less to take care of. Hence, why I’m writing a blog for the first time in 2020.

Six Months of Nomading
While we don’t know exactly where we will be in a month, C.T. & I foresee going on with some version of the nomad life for up to six months before settling back into San Francisco. Until then, we’ll continue to learn how to find temporary homes that give us what we need to work remotely. Though we don’t foresee the nomad life being a year-round situation, I hope it’s something we’ll continue to make possible over the coming years. Luckily, the upcoming week off from work provides opportunities to reflect and explore.
One way we’re doing that is through Scuba Diving. After posting this blog, I’ll finish Day 2 of the PADI Open Water Diver Certification program. We’ll complete the certification with open water dives on the Caribbean Coast of Mexico in Playa del Carmen or Cozumel in early January. More on that and other exciting side-projects in an upcoming blog.
Got any tips or tricks for life on the road? Or where to scuba dive in Mexico?
